Aren’t you overqualified for this position?

This is a rare question that only comes up when either you have more related experience than the interviewer estimates the job needs; or, if you seem to have more knowledge that even the interviewer him/herself!

Again, this does not mean that it is being asked in a negative sense. Use this opportunity to share with the interviewer new ways to think about the situation.

Sure you could be overqualified for the position, but if it has more advantages than drawbacks, wouldn’t it be better eventually?

Example:

“As far as the job market goes, ‘overqualified’ can be a relative term depending on how tight the job market is. And right now it’s very tight. I understand and accept that.

  1. I am confident that given the opportunity it would result in greater benefits for us all.

  2. Due to my extensive experience in sales, I could start to add value to my job right away. Even faster than someone with less experience who would have to be shown the ropes.

  3. Something else that I could help with is something they don’t teach in business school. Example, (How to hire, train, motivate etc). When it comes to working with people and motivating them to do their best, there is no replacement for what you learn over many years of front-line experience. I am positive that this would also be a benefit that I would bring to the job.

  4. For me too there are strong benefits. Right now I am unemployed and I want to work. The position I’ve applied for is exactly what I like doing and am very good at. I know for a fact that I would be happier doing this than anything else and that is what matters to me most; more than even money or a designation.

  5. After all the experience I have, I’ve had enough of job hunting and want a permanent position at this point in my career. I’m looking to make a long term commitment and I know that if I perform well, other opportunities will open up for me right here. In time, I am sure I will find other ways to help this company and in doing so, help myself.”

NOTE:

The hidden concern behind the ‘overqualified’ question is one of stability. The interviewer is worried that you will move on to greener pastures the moment the opportunity presents itself. Anything you say to substantiate the earnestness of your commitment to the employer, or any reassurance that you are looking to stay for the long-term, will help you allay his/her apprehension regarding this.
